Building deck railing with Identify the upper entry as the existing balcony rack. This post should be 30 inches long. Take the stepped trolley from the lowest step. Cut a 4-times-4 post 34 inches in length. Place posts in the outer corner of the lowest step strings at the edge of the first and second steps… Place a 3/8-inch drill in variable speed drill. Drill two 3/8 “holes through strings and the lower 4-times-4 posts. Use 7-inch carriage bolts, washers and nuts to attach the post to strings. Use water pass to check that the post is vertical. Shim the posts until the level, if necessary, before tightening the bolts.
Building deck railing place a straight board over both posts and hold the board 2 inches above each staircase. Use the marker to mark where the board crosses the posts. Measure and cut a 2-of-4 numbers on board to fit between the two vertical posts at the selected point. Hammer this lower rail in place with 2½-inch nail. Cut additional 2-of-4 numbers on board to fit between the top of the two pillars. The top edge of this board should rest directly over the top edge of the posts. Hammer this top rail in place with 2½-inch nail. Measure the distance between the center of the upper and lower rails. Measure the distance between the two vertical posts.
