Summer Garden Inspired Wedding Shoot

09.3.10

I had been scouting blogs for many months and noticed a trend in a concept known as “bridal shoots”. Basically, they are mock weddings in which you can dream up your perfect set-up and take beautiful photographs of details, the couple, and your location. Unfortunately, all the beautiful shoots I kept seeing were across the country, mainly in California. I’ve said this before, but I feel as though South Florida has some secret society of photographers that nobody can be a part of unless maybe you bribe with Godiva chocolates. And since I’d most likely end up eating the chocolates myself, I’d get discouraged one too many times. And frustrated. A combination of hogging the computer and hearing me complain drove Adi insane. Because he can only take so much whining and quite frankly, wanted me to focus on something other than sulking, he told me something that I still apply today… Don’t wait around for somebody. Be that somebody who does something.

And so I did. I have to be honest…I had no clue what I was doing. It was difficult, at times embarrassing, and frustrating. I was promised things by vendors that never came through, I was naive in my requests, and most likely, unreasonable. But I learned. And I kept at it. Through it all, I met some incredibly talented people who were not only willing to help, but excited at the idea. And today, I can call those people my friends. From the incredible dress designer to photographers I met, to my model couple, I was blown away by the generosity and support. Looking back at everything, it was probably the best experience I’ve had since jumping on this crazy journey. I was honored & humbled to work with people that are willing to see this industry grow into something that is more about community than competition. To Ozzy, Julie, Lauren, Jorge, Krystle, Oana, Elizabeth, LindaJackie, Aniela, Diana, Alex, my girls that pitched in and helped, and my number one supporter Adi, thank you. Thank you for all you’ve done and all you continue to do. You are all amazing to the tenth power, and I was so lucky to have been able to meet you.

As a child, I’d read the Secret Garden and let my imagination run wild with the beauty Mary discovered. Visually, it was heaven on earth. When I thought about a theme, a summer garden with a touch of vintage seemed like the perfect fit. We scouted places and collected items we thought would flow nicely. Vintage branches, birdcages, ivy, and summer flowers began to come together in ways we never expected and my childhood vision of the Secret Garden came to life. Whenever I see bridal shoots like this, the details are so incredible. And probably unlikely in a real wedding situation, unless of course, the budget allows for it. For this shoot, we wanted things that any bride could put together with any budget. Krystle made this “table number” using vintage fabric and painting a frame from the local craft store. A simple, yet beautiful touch. We could not get a florist to commit to the project, however Flowers by Le Fleur was kind enough to provide us with beautiful flowers that we arranged ourselves. The bouquet turned out beautiful and we were quite impressed with ourselves. Although you really can’t go wrong with peonies, vintage lace, and a brooch…Meet our adorable couple Diana & Alex who were not only beautiful on camera, but sweet as can be off as well. It was such a pleasure working with them and oh-be-still-my-heart, the photos we got!Separately, these two were quite stunning……but together, they were breathtaking. When I first met the great Jorge Manuel, I was a nervous wreck. I thought he’d laugh at me and tell me not to waste his time. But instead, he welcomed us into his studio and his imagination and I held back the tears. No really, I repeatedly told myself not to cry. As soon as he heard the idea behind the photoshoot,  he said he had the perfect dress in mind. I never expected it to be this beautiful, this flowy, and this romantic. And I never expected Jorge to be that gracious, kind, and unbelievably generous.
I love natural moments like these… Robbin’s Lodge Park provided so many gorgeous spots for photos, it was unreal. I could stare at these all day:

Diana, you are so gorge, it’s just not right. Alex was not to be outdone and looked pretty studly as well How adorable are these two?!I’ll end with a favorite.

Lavi & Paul: Boca Engagement

07.28.10

It’s not often that you find a couple so sure about their future. So sure, that they are willing to put everything on the line. It’s not often that we give up complete control and place our fate in the hands of God. Many of us would like to think we do, but in reality, giving up control is difficult. It was difficult for Lavi & Paul too, but they felt this was the only way. The only way to know for sure is to leave their futures in a power much greater than theirs.

Lavi & Paul are both pursuing a career in the medical field and will one day make incredible doctors. As Lavi was attending school in her hometown of Florida, Paul was finishing his up in Indiana. When the time came for him to place his top three choices for residency programs, Paul listed Florida as one. Not the first choice, but the second. Why? Because he really wanted God to decide. Knowing very well that some students don’t get placed in any of their top choices, he said a prayer and left the rest to Him. And Lavi? Well Lavi crossed her fingers just in case. Sure enough, Paul was placed in Florida for residency and instantly knew what came next. A sweet proposal later and these two were on their way to spending the rest of their lives together. And the next few years of residency in Florida. Together.

Saying these two are ridiculously in love would be the understatement of the year. And who could blame them? I can’t help but wonder how two people so good looking were able to stand being so far a part for so long. I am excited to announce that they will be tying the knot this Sunday and I can hardly wait. And yes, blame residency and med school for an engagement shoot so close to their wedding date. Apparently, patients’ health comes first… pssshhh. :)

We started the shoot off in an alley. Yes, alley’s in Boca Raton look straight out of a painting. I know, we are very lucky.

I could shoot at Mizner Park all day long. Adi and I got there a bit earlier to scope out the location and there was really no need to scope. Because everywhere we looked, there was amazing light.
Oh, they brought it. And worked it like pros. That wind couldn’t have come in a better moment. Fierce & so very fabulous. And Paul, I just know you’d love being referred to as the latter. ;)
Lavi is beautiful. And hot. And those two combinations are lethal, as Paul could probably attest to. :) One of my favorites.

Alex & Toni: Hollywood Wedding

05.4.10

By the looks of everything, you would have never known it was that day. High heels spread across the floor, loud laughter bouncing from every wall in the room, and a never ending supply of mascara. Nothing out of the ordinary for a group of girlfriends getting ready together. However, today wasn’t just any ordinary day…it was her day. The day every girl dreams of…the day every girl anticipates.  A calm and collected Alex patiently waited as her friends excitedly buttoned up her wedding dress. She smiled at the sound of her future husband’s voice outside the door, reminding the girls they were running late. She knew that voice so well and would soon call it her husband’s. Amidst the chaos of wedding day mornings, we made our way to take pictures and Alex and Toni saw each other for the first time on their day. Sweet whispers came from the hallway and soon enough, Alex erupted in giggles. Because that’s what they do…laugh and love.

Though it was a fairly large wedding, Alex & Toni stole plenty of moments to themselves. Through looks, whispers, and lots of hugs, they were living out their dream day…together. I couldn’t help but notice how well Toni took care of his bride. Holding her bouquet and helping with her dress came as second nature to him and it became obvious that these two had a deep love for one another that was expressed through gentleness, care, and laughter. After a beautiful ceremony at the Elim Church and reception at the Hillcrest Country Club, we made our way to the beach to bask in the sun’s warm rays. As Alex grew tired towards the end, Toni gently held her as Lauren, Adi, & I snapped the last few shots. And with that, they walked hand in hand together, ending their dream day and beginning their life together.

Alex & Toni, thank you for showing me what kindness in love looks like. What a gentle hand and a silly face can do to a tired bride at the end of the day. Thank you for having patience with me as I worked to get these out to you. You were both so much fun to work with and I wish you all the best blessings in life .

Enjoy your pictures and click here for a slideshow.

Lauren is my ring bearer, per say. She just gets beautiful, clean pictures of rings. EVERY. TIME.

The picture below on the left is my most favorite Lauren shot ever. If it wasn’t strange to hang other people’s wedding photos in your bedroom, I’d so have this. On a canvas. Huge.

It was a rather chilly day so we went inside for some sweet, warm serenading. Fun fact, Toni has by far one of the most amazing voices ever. I was truly blown away and I’ll admit…a bit jealous when I first heard him sing. ;)  Future photographer anyone? This cutie is even holding the camera like a pro.

After the reception, we headed over to Hollywood Beach and had so much fun getting these final shots of the day. The light was absolutely divine. As were Alex’s eyes.
Just as I was getting the shot above, Adi got this one below. I love that we can see an image so differently. Adi captured this shot and I loved how completely random (note the shoe) yet so very colorful it looks. As Alex was working it for me, Toni was trying to get a break. Adi caught his “relaxed and ready for this to be over” look and I love it.

Estee & Emanuel: Engagement

04.8.10

Their families go way back. Before Estee or Emanuel ever came along, they were great friends. Amigos…tight homies, if you will. After moving to the states, one in Chicago, the other in Atlanta, they hoped their friendships would somehow last. If they had only known that their children would one day fall in love and merge these old friends into one big family. Emanuel proposed to Estee on Christmas day in Chicago. This wasn’t just any proposal, and Emanuel went through great lengths to make sure Estee was surrounded by people who loved her. As his father filmed what was supposed to be a regular Christmas morning, and as the family secretly cheered on, Estee tore open her “last” gift from Emanuel. Inside, she discovered a beautiful globe with a sparkly something. By the time she looked up with tears in her eyes, Emanuel was already on one knee and the family eagerly held their breath from the sidelines. Through hugs and tears, she finally remembered to say yes, and the entire room celebrated. As they were describing the day to me, Estee mentioned that she wouldn’t have had it any other way. And that’s just perfect, if you ask me.

I traveled to Georgia for this engagement shoot and we ventured the grounds of the beautiful Piedmont Park. It was the first day of spring and the sun was out for the first time in a long time. As we walked around scoping good spots, I couldn’t help but think how meant to be it all was…from way before they were even born. Estee & Emanuel, I cannot WAIT for your June wedding! It will be just as bright, beautiful, and filled with love as this day was. Thank you for taking me in so warmly and for my first amazing smoothie of the year.  :)

Click HERE for a slideshow of their day.

When we saw this connected path, Emanuel stopped and commented how neat it would be to have a photo that represents their separate journeys which led to each other. Once in a while, I’ll get a guy that says something like this at a photoshoot and I turn around and do a happy dance. Emi, you rock.

And who says guys don’t take great pictures? I think Emi looks quite handsome:

We found a hill with grass and decided to lie on it and take in the first day of spring…

Estee, you. are. BEAUTIFUL.

After a quick clothing change (and smoothie to cool off), we headed over to get some “spring” shots by the most beautiful cherry blossom trees.

These two are so sweet with each other…I love this set

Estee totally working it…and Emanuel loving it:

And just before the sun went down, we finished with a few beauties by the lake…

We found this bridge so romantic:

Happy Thursday Everyone!!

Oana & Travis: Canada Wedding

03.8.10

Actually, it’s a rather funny story. You see, Oana had just moved to a new city and didn’t know her way around quite yet. She figured what better way to see the town than attend a speed dating session and “have a boy show me the ropes and pay for it too”? At least, that was the plan. As Oana collected a few phone numbers from possible contenders that night and arranged for a few dates, a boy named Travis came over and sat across the table from her. They talked for only a few minutes, exchanged information, and went about the rotation process. Later that evening, Travis called her and they ended up talking for hours on end. They arranged to go on a date and let’s just say that both cancelled all other dates. Forever.

They fell deeply in love and haven’t stopped since. Oana is near and dear to my heart and being able to spend a few days with these two before their big day has confirmed my greatest wish for her: a great love and partner in life. Their wedding was perfect from start to finish and I haven’t seen that much emotion and pure happiness in a long time. I promised not to get as emotional at her wedding as she was at mine but failed miserably. This wasn’t so great for my camera. ;) Oana & Travis, you are so special to me. I pray God’s greatest blessings on your life and that you will always be this happy and filled with gratitude for one another.  Thank you for giving me the great privilege of taking photos of the greatest day of your lives. Lucky for you, all the warmth surrounding you guys made up for the crazy Canadian winter I was forced to endure :)

**I also want to give a HUGE shout out to the awesome vendors that worked their magic on making this wedding happen. You are all so incredibly genuine and the “team spirit” attitudes blew me away. Lauren & I had such an awesome time working with all of you and we hope to someday see you all again, eh? ;) The decor and coordination was a smashing success and super smooth process thanks to the ever creative and fabulous Amanda & Shawn Parsons of Unforgettable Weddings. I can’t emphasize enough how great of a job they did and how important it is to have such wonderful coordinators at your event. Andrew & Emily of Sorlie Arts rocked out the videography and even taught Lauren & I some tricks! If anyone is in the Barrie area of Canada or just plain anywhere in the country, call these guys immediately. They’re young, fun, modern, and amazing at what they do.**

Ok, now for the pictures…

I just adored Oana’s bouquet. It was loose, flowy, romantic, and quite glamorous. Besides coordinating and designing the wedding, Amanda also did all the flowers. She’s quite the talented one.

Oana looked flawless thanks to Shelley of Shelley’s Beauty Services.

One of the best decisions a bride and groom can make, in my opinion, is a first look. This hasn’t always been very popular with brides but choosing to see your soon to be husband before the ceremony not only allows for pictures and moments like this, but also gives the couple a chance to have a very private and touching “first look” at one another. It’s now my most favorite moment, hands down. Since I’m rambling on, I might as well mention how totally awesome it is to have two photographers at your event. Here was Lauren’s perspective…

And here was mine:

Aren’t they just so incredibly beautiful?! My camera fell in some serious love that day.

In order to prevent our limbs from freezing off, Andrew & Emily took us in a cozy cafe to thaw off. About two steps into walking in, I was in love. So much color and energy everywhere. Thus, resulting in a few of my favorite images…

Oana & Travis were married in the uber romantic and modern At The Five restaurant. It was a very small and intimate wedding of their closest family and friends and I just couldn’t help but feel so blessed to be a part of it.

Did I mention emotional? I love this so much because of all the emotion in her eyes.

I adore this shot that Lauren got.

A few pretty details…

Check out the beautiful flowers that miss Amanda rocked out!

I hear peacocks are going to be everywhere this year and I couldn’t be more excited!

While guests were nibbling on cocktails, we ventured out into the cold to take some photos and found this gem of an alley. I was so excited, I momentarily forgot about my blue fingers and loss of feeling in my toes.

I think Oana looks supermodel fabulous here. No pun intended, but these kind of pictures, are right up my alley. I love beautiful things mixed with unexpected grittier places like these. While pictures in parks are great, these are the kind I really love. It just feels so fresh, modern, and urban…and I love that they aren’t competing with a flower or tree for attention. Thanks guys for trusting us and giving us free reign. You two are da bomb.

I just looovee this one.

We made it back just in time for some really great speeches…

The first dance was so beautiful and full of emotion. Yea…I cried.

Before the party wrapped up, we went outside to get some final shots. Night photography is not something I’m particularly crazy about just because I love using natural light. But I have to say, I ended up loving these. Thanks Andrew, for teaching me some tricks and pushing me to push my own boundaries. You rock! I think this could quite possibly be my most favorite Lauren shot ever. It was of their reflection and I’m kinda crazy about it.

Travis wanted to carry his bride over the threshold of their new home and I couldn’t have been happier to get a picture of it.
