Summer Garden Inspired Wedding Shoot

09.3.10

I had been scouting blogs for many months and noticed a trend in a concept known as “bridal shoots”. Basically, they are mock weddings in which you can dream up your perfect set-up and take beautiful photographs of details, the couple, and your location. Unfortunately, all the beautiful shoots I kept seeing were across the country, mainly in California. I’ve said this before, but I feel as though South Florida has some secret society of photographers that nobody can be a part of unless maybe you bribe with Godiva chocolates. And since I’d most likely end up eating the chocolates myself, I’d get discouraged one too many times. And frustrated. A combination of hogging the computer and hearing me complain drove Adi insane. Because he can only take so much whining and quite frankly, wanted me to focus on something other than sulking, he told me something that I still apply today… Don’t wait around for somebody. Be that somebody who does something.

And so I did. I have to be honest…I had no clue what I was doing. It was difficult, at times embarrassing, and frustrating. I was promised things by vendors that never came through, I was naive in my requests, and most likely, unreasonable. But I learned. And I kept at it. Through it all, I met some incredibly talented people who were not only willing to help, but excited at the idea. And today, I can call those people my friends. From the incredible dress designer to photographers I met, to my model couple, I was blown away by the generosity and support. Looking back at everything, it was probably the best experience I’ve had since jumping on this crazy journey. I was honored & humbled to work with people that are willing to see this industry grow into something that is more about community than competition. To Ozzy, Julie, Lauren, Jorge, Krystle, Oana, Elizabeth, LindaJackie, Aniela, Diana, Alex, my girls that pitched in and helped, and my number one supporter Adi, thank you. Thank you for all you’ve done and all you continue to do. You are all amazing to the tenth power, and I was so lucky to have been able to meet you.

As a child, I’d read the Secret Garden and let my imagination run wild with the beauty Mary discovered. Visually, it was heaven on earth. When I thought about a theme, a summer garden with a touch of vintage seemed like the perfect fit. We scouted places and collected items we thought would flow nicely. Vintage branches, birdcages, ivy, and summer flowers began to come together in ways we never expected and my childhood vision of the Secret Garden came to life. Whenever I see bridal shoots like this, the details are so incredible. And probably unlikely in a real wedding situation, unless of course, the budget allows for it. For this shoot, we wanted things that any bride could put together with any budget. Krystle made this “table number” using vintage fabric and painting a frame from the local craft store. A simple, yet beautiful touch. We could not get a florist to commit to the project, however Flowers by Le Fleur was kind enough to provide us with beautiful flowers that we arranged ourselves. The bouquet turned out beautiful and we were quite impressed with ourselves. Although you really can’t go wrong with peonies, vintage lace, and a brooch…Meet our adorable couple Diana & Alex who were not only beautiful on camera, but sweet as can be off as well. It was such a pleasure working with them and oh-be-still-my-heart, the photos we got!Separately, these two were quite stunning……but together, they were breathtaking. When I first met the great Jorge Manuel, I was a nervous wreck. I thought he’d laugh at me and tell me not to waste his time. But instead, he welcomed us into his studio and his imagination and I held back the tears. No really, I repeatedly told myself not to cry. As soon as he heard the idea behind the photoshoot,  he said he had the perfect dress in mind. I never expected it to be this beautiful, this flowy, and this romantic. And I never expected Jorge to be that gracious, kind, and unbelievably generous.
I love natural moments like these… Robbin’s Lodge Park provided so many gorgeous spots for photos, it was unreal. I could stare at these all day:

Diana, you are so gorge, it’s just not right. Alex was not to be outdone and looked pretty studly as well How adorable are these two?!I’ll end with a favorite.

Romance...without red roses.

08.25.10

I haven’t always been this way. In fact, it used to bother me. Seeing those cheesy red roses in the arms of boyfriends at the local flower shop, or hearing about the candlelight dinners, or worst of all, seeing men fawn over their other halves as if they were incapable of doing anything on their own.  It bothered me not because I was some sort of bitter-jolted ex-girlfriend to someone (I wasn’t) but because I just wasn’t into it. It wasn’t my thing. Since meeting my husband and truly understanding the concept of falling in complete-head-over-heels-love, things have slightly changed. While I’m still not a fan of bouquets of red roses, I now find myself loving romance. And I find myself loving the little things much more than grand gestures. A sweet note left on my night table, an unexpected bouquet of peonies or wild flowers (much better than the red roses),  a cupcake because I can’t go more than 1 week without having one, opening the door not because I’m incapable but because he insists I feel special and taken care of, or even a text. It’s in these simple things that I find romance beautiful.

And because Adi told me last night that he loves when I post pictures of actual work I’ve done instead of random ones, and because although that wasn’t very romantic of him to say, I still value his input, here’s a photo that I do find incredibly romantic. I refer to this wedding as “the field wedding” because of the beautiful flower field we shot portraits in. Look for the post soon and happy {romantic} Wednesday!

Estee & Emi: Atlanta Wedding

08.19.10

The room was floating with chatter. In true girl-form, make-up tips were exchange, hair was admired, and Starbucks coffee was brought. The day began with excitement and unfolded much the same way. As Emi waited to see Estee, I could sense a certain eagerness in his eyes, and as she approached him, the excitement grew. With great anticipation and joy, Estee & Emi were married in a beautiful ceremony filled with loving poems, songs, and words of encouragement from those that loved them. At the end of their reception and just before the sun set, we took the new Mr. & Mrs. out for some final photos of their day. As if a dream, Estee beamed with joy as we roamed the grounds and declared “I can’t believe it.” And with that, her new husband slipped his arm around her and hand in hand, led her away as if to say, believe it.

I had the great joy and honor of shooting Estee & Emi’s wedding in Atlanta and have been wanting to post their wedding ever since. So it is with the same great excitement that started their day that I finally give you the adorable and very sweet, Estee & Emi. A huge thank-you to both of you for being so patient and understanding with my school schedule.

Enjoy your photos and don’t forget to click here for your slideshow.

I was in love with Estee’s shoes. And the gorgeous hydrangeas in her backyard. The very talented team of Christine Cocian did the hair for all the ladies. Email her ASAP at ccocian@gmail.com if you have any event at all…she is young, talented, and oh-so fabulous. The flowers were absolutely beautiful and if any of you are in the Atlanta area and in need of a florist, do not hesitate to call Michelle of Creative Home Goods and Services. Her website is currently in the works so until then, email me if you’d like her info.

As I was with the bride, Lauren snapped these of Emi and I must say, he looked quite dapper.
Estee you’re beautiful. Period.
Estee & Emi did a “first look” to allocate enough time for photos. I couldn’t have been happier as I strongly believe this is the best thing to do.

Married! There isn’t any other moment throughout the day that is more exciting then the  first moment they walk out as husband and wife. I don’t usually post “guest” photos but this was so much fun, I just had to. Ok, I couldn’t resist. While we were taking bridal portraits, the father of this little girl was searching for her only to find her “cooling off”. I wished I could have taken her home with me. We roamed the grounds of the reception hall and found some hidden heavenly light. The perfect ending.

Something Lovely

08.4.10

A little something from this weekend I wanted to share with you all. Something lovely and beautiful.

I know some people search the world
To find something like what we have
I know people will try
Try to divide something so real
So ’til the end of time
I’m telling you there is

No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I’m feeling
No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you”

Sweet Summer Love

07.26.10

Surrounded by fields of lavender and the smell of orchards nearby, I breathed in summer. As the sun was making it’s last few hours known, a soft glow fell upon us and grazed our skin. These are the moments of summer that make the long, hot days bearable and the frizzy hair worth it. And when you get to see summer like I had the opportunity to this past weekend, well, well, well….consider yourself lucky. Because beyond the beautiful fields and sweet smells, there was love. A beautiful, gentle kind of love that makes you feel the warm feelings of summer and wish for them forever. Happy Monday!

Let's hear it for the boys.

07.15.10

I’m often reminded that my blog shows too much love for the ladies. In fact, one particular reader has told me it’s too girly and I need to man it up some. Considering the fact that I am definitely all girl, I’ve had a difficult time with this. Because really, putting up photographs of Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s is Adi’s thing, not so much mine. I’m beyond grateful that there are any guys out there who actually read my blog and to be honest, I’m always kind of shocked. In a humbled, thank-you-Jesus kinda way. So to show my appreciation, I thought I’d include some of my photos from a wedding I second-shot for the amazing Michelle of Ava Photography. I am usually with the bride as she gets ready and so being with the groom and his groomsmen was quite the change. Oh, who am I kidding?… it’s completely different. Boys are relaxed. Boys watch movies before the wedding. Boys tease each other as they help with their ties. And boys are up for anything. This was the largest bridal party I’ve shot to date and although it was raining that day and quite chilly, I never heard one complaint about the hair. Not one. Amazing.

Here are the boys, in all of their no-fuss glory. Even more amazing was the fact that they were all related. So, you can just imagine the teasing that took place. :)

Some brotherly love for the man of the hour.

Turning Clients into Friends

06.23.10

It usually starts with an email. An inquiry about a wedding date, pricing, or a question about how I deal with in-laws on the wedding day. Then starts a game of tag-you’re-it… I write back, the bride writes back. And somewhere along the way, we begin to talk about wedding ideas, bridesmaids that are too busy to help, and shoes. Always shoes. Before you know it, we’re exchanging recipes, discussing the oil spill, and planning to get together for dinner after their honeymoon. I can’t emphasize how much I love when this happens. More than finding a client, I love finding new friends. I know that I am in the very early stages of my business and that I don’t have that much experience compared to others, and I also know this may not sound too great or professional, but I try very hard to attract a certain type of couple. One that I can connect with and be great friends with. Because not only do I believe that the couple will then love my style and thus my photos, but I believe the whole process is more enjoyable when there is a connection. Plus, as any groom can tell you, taking photos with a photographer that’s a stranger can be tedious and long, however if you feel like your friend is snapping shots of you, it can be a whole different experience. I still have so much to learn and am excited to keep growing. But in the mean time, I’m just plain excited that I’ve met people and made new friends along the way.

Because every post is better with a picture, here’s one from this past weekend with my bride and groom. Adi couldn’t make it this time around so I brought Lauren along as a second shooter and as always, we had a blast together! Also, this photo was taken by my 13 year old cousin who served as the best wedding dress arranger in the world. What can I say…it’s in our genes. :) Happy Wednesday everyone!

Love, Something Beautiful.

06.22.10

Here’s the thing. I love love. I love seeing it, shooting it, feeling it, and giving it. It’s what makes the world go round and life worth living. Love is beautiful and yet so simple. Which all brings me to this past weekend. We were in Georgia for a beautiful wedding surrounded by love. Not just from the bride and groom…but from friends, family, and even strangers. The sacrifices that were made, the helping hand that was lent, the words that were spoken, the emotion that was felt…all so heartfelt and genuine… and all in the name of love.

This wedding was special for me not just because I reconnected with a few old friends and made some new ones, but because I felt so welcomed and encouraged. Thanks to the wonderful family & friends I have there, Georgia has become a sort of second home for us and I always leave with my heart full. As we wrapped up the wedding, I counted my blessings and left feeling so very fortunate for the wonderful things I get to witness…to be a part of. For all of you who were a part of this weekend’s celebration and spoke a kind word to me, shared a laugh with me, went out of your way to show kindness, and took out of your time to remind me that love is beautiful, thank you. Thank you for showing me that love can be found in friendship, a nice gesture, a good laugh, an encouraging word or a compliment, and a good song. ;) Here’s a picture from this weekends wedding that I find romantic and filled with..well, love. Happy Tuesday!

Fabulous Friday Find: Jorge Manuel

05.28.10

The search for a wedding gown can be one of the most exciting experience a girl will ever have. As I walked into the studio surrounded by the most beautiful gowns my eyes have ever seen, I felt the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand up. As the designer graciously gave us the grand tour, I became a bit emotional. Hold back the tears Dee, pull yourself together. Before you think I’m the strangest human being on planet earth, let me explain.

Jorge Manuel is a young, brilliant Miami-based designer who is fairly new to the fashion scene. Though he comes from an architectural background that strongly influences his designs, his true passion is creating masterpiece couture wedding gowns. When I contacted Jorge to be a part of our stylized wedding photoshoot, I didn’t think I’d ever hear back. I was shocked to see how quickly he instantly agreed, emphasizing how much he supports art. I drove down to his studio and was beyond nervous to meet such an inspiring designer. The warmth, kindness, and generosity that I was greeted with completely blew me away. As we walked through the studio and I listened to Jorge speak with such enthusiasm and passion about his designs and inspirations, I could not help but start to feel emotional. In one year, Jorge has put out numerous collections, he’s been published in bridal magazines, shown at New York Fashion week, and has had success beyond his own expectations.  And through everything, he has maintained the most humble and gracious attitude I’ve ever seen. God knows if I could design gowns like him, I’d be naming my own planets and thinking they all revolved around my craft. ;)

His gowns are beautifully crafted with perfect pleats, origami and pinwheel details, amazingly structured corsets and bodices, and so much more. Each dress is hand sewn and created with thought and precision beyond belief. I really can’t rave enough about his modern yet timeless designs and if any of you want to stand out in a glam wedding gown that will be the talk of the town, definitely purchase a Jorge Manuel gown. These dresses are to-die-for… I just can’t say enough about his collections! Jorge, thank you with all my heart for opening your doors to an unknown girl with a dream. For supporting me and showing me such love and kindness. For sharing a piece of your insanely talented mind and giving us the grand tour of your gorgeous studio. It’s people like you who make me want to do what I do and people like you who inspire me to never give up. You are beautiful inside and out and you will rock the industry to pieces. Here’s just a peak at the beyond beautiful dress that Jorge provided for our shoot and do check out his entire collections here. And look out for the new one coming out in June…it is out of this world!

Here’s a gorgeous shot from Weddings Unveiled of one of Jorge’s creations. I drooled all over his floor when I saw this…

Yesterday...

05.27.10

It’s a rather bittersweet moment when things are over. Yesterday as we wrapped up the big photoshoot we’ve been working on, I sat back and took it all in. The set up, the location, the people…I just could not have been more grateful for the way everything came together. The idea of doing something different, something you’ve never done before, can be extremely frightening and intimidating. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t debate calling off the whole thing the night before. But I’m so glad and completely blown away by the love and encouragement that I witnessed yesterday. In an industry that isn’t often inviting and open to sharing and helping, a few photographers came together and proved differently. And had a blast doing it. I met a group of people during this process that I felt honored and humbled to work with. I saw such talent and passion that I walked away with great peers and wonderful friendships. I can’t wait to fill you all in on the full details and introduce some of the most amazing talents out there to you. I’ve been pretty busy catching up on the life I’ve neglected for the past couple of weeks but I’ll leave you with this beautiful little sneak peak that was yesterday.
