Fashion Photographer: Avedon

05.8.10

Elegant. Artistic. Glamour. Movement. These were all words that came to mind as a good friend and I walked through the gallery honoring the great Richard Avedon. After all, he revolutionized fashion photography starting in the post-World War II era and redefined the role of the fashion photographer like no other. As I strolled through the exhibition, I couldn’t help but stand in awe. This man wasn’t just a fashion photographer; he was art defined. His images literally took our breath away and every so often, we stopped and stared for what could have been a lifetime. Avedon managed to create spirited, imaginative photographs that displayed the modern woman and fashion in a new light. He spun his own interpretation of the 1950′s and shook up the cold, static world of fashion photography. Whether it was a highly glamorous woman posing elegantly with perfectly poised elephants, or a fashion icon standing in the middle of a circus, Avedon pushed every envelope he was ever given. He injected energy, movement, art, and style into his work that even to this day stands as inspiration. I left the exhibition feeling completely moved to push for something different. I left with the impression that by making yourself different, seeing things not always for what they appear, and thinking outside of the box, you create the best possible way to set yourself apart.  Here are a few of his images spanning through the 70′s, though his work continued up until 2001. Happy Saturday!
