Horizontal deck railing – A balcony is an attractive element of the design of houses, offering access to the outside and extra space for parties and events. The balconies need some kind of railing, and offer some visual privacy. The simplest and easiest railing to install by yourself is a wooden handrail. Measure the external dimensions of your balcony. If the longest dimension is more than 6 feet, install railing posts so that there is no more than 6 feet between them. These poles are installed by cutting a piece of 4×4 woods to 8.5 inches more than the height of your railing. Cut a notch 1.75 inches deep and 10 inches in length along one end of the pole. Attach the pole to the inside edge of the outer beam of your deck with 4.5 ” flat stop screws that have large washers. You may have to cut one of the deck boards to make room for the post. If so, install a block under the new end of the cut board and attach it to the post.
Install horizontal deck railing to the top and bottom. These are 2×4 that goes between the posts and all the way to the posts of the existing corners. The top mini railing must be flush with the top of the pole, and the bottom should be 1.5 inches above the floor of the deck. Make sure the rails are level, and then install them with 3-inch screws so that the inside edge of the mini-rails is flush with the inside edge of the posts. Install the bolts. These are 2×2 pieces that run vertically from the upper to the lower mini railing. The top of each piece must be level with the top of the mini railing, and the foot must be cut at an angle of 45 ° or 22.5 °, with the long side placed against the bottom mini railing. Separate the bolts so that the gap between them is less than 4 inches. Screw the bolts into the mini-rails with 3-inch screws.

Install the top cover. This is a 2×4 placed along the top of the mini horizontal deck railing, posts and bolts. If you have to use more than one table, place the gap on a pole, and cut each end of both boards at 45 °. Put them together so that the angles fit together and create a level joint. Screw the top cover to the posts and mini top rail with 3-inch screws.
